The NIH and the NCCAM are currently conducting studies on how the practices of energy therapies, distance healing, spiritual well-being and prayer might help increase one's psychological functioning and adjustment to illness. In a study funded by the NCCAM, spirituality was defined as "the way in which people understand their lives in view of their ultimate meaning and value." The NCCAM described spirituality in a broader sense, as "one's sense of purpose and meaning to life, beyond material values, practiced in many different ways", including, but not limited to religion.
