Complementary Healing Practices

Medical practitioners and scientists are now beginning to recognize the merits of complementary healing practices.

Reiki along with other energy therapies are currently being tested in clinical trials at the National Institute of Health (NIH) (www.nih.gov) and the National Institute of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) (www.NCCAM.nih.gov), for their healing effects.

The NIH and the NCCAM are currently conducting studies on how the practices of energy therapies, distance healing, spiritual well-being and prayer might help increase one's psychological functioning and adjustment to illness. In a study funded by the NCCAM, spirituality was defined as "the way in which people understand their lives in view of their ultimate meaning and value." The NCCAM described spirituality in a broader sense, as "one's sense of purpose and meaning to life, beyond material values, practiced in many different ways", including, but not limited to religion. Prayer and spirituality have gained interest in the cultural systems of medicine and are being considered in the context of mind/body treatment. This growing openness to the spiritual dimensions of health have been substantiated by the increasing number of research studies and clinical trials being conducted by the complementary, medical and scientific communities.
